Open vs Enclosed
Car Transport
Choosing the right transport type can save you money or protect your most valuable vehicle. Open carriers handle 90% of all shipments. Enclosed is recommended for luxury, classic, and exotic cars.
Open Transport
Your vehicle is transported on an open multi-car carrier — the same method used by dealerships and manufacturers nationwide. Affordable, widely available, and perfectly safe for standard vehicles.
Enclosed Transport
Your vehicle travels inside a fully enclosed trailer, completely shielded from weather, road debris, and prying eyes. The standard for luxury, classic, and exotic vehicle transport.
How to Prepare Your Car
for Shipping
Please ensure all personal items are removed from your vehicle, and taking photos at the time of the shipment. Complete this checklist before your driver arrives.
Before Pickup
- Wash your car thoroughly so any pre-existing damage is clearly visible during inspection
- Photograph all four sides, the interior, roof, and undercarriage for your records
- Remove all personal belongings — carriers are not liable for items left inside
- Fill the fuel tank to no more than a quarter — enough to drive on/off, not excess weight
- Disable toll tags and remove parking passes to avoid unwanted charges en route
- Retract or remove custom antennas, spoilers, bike racks, or roof-mounted accessories
- Confirm your car starts and runs — notify us in advance if non-operational
- Check for fluid leaks and fix if possible — carriers may refuse a heavily leaking vehicle
At Pickup & Delivery
- Ensure someone is present at pickup to hand over keys and sign the Bill of Lading
- Review the Bill of Lading carefully — it is the official record of your car's condition
- Note every scratch, dent, or chip on the form in writing before signing
- At delivery, inspect the vehicle thoroughly against the original Bill of Lading
- Test basic functions: lights, mirrors, windows, and door locks
- Document any new damage with photos immediately — do not wait
- Report new damage in writing on the delivery Bill of Lading before the driver leaves
- Keep a signed copy of both pickup and delivery Bills of Lading for your records
FAQs
How long does car shipping take?
Most shipments take 1–7 business days. Cross-country routes (NY → CA) typically take 5–7 days; shorter routes (FL → GA) may take 1–2 days. Exact timing depends on carrier availability and route traffic.
How much does it cost to ship a car?
The average cost is $500–$1,500 for open transport and $1,000–$2,500 for enclosed. The exact price depends on distance, vehicle size, route, and current demand. Use our free quote calculator for an instant estimate.
Is my car insured during transport?
Yes. All carriers in our network carry cargo insurance. Your vehicle is covered from the moment it is loaded until delivery. The Bill of Lading documents the condition at both ends and protects you against transit damage.
Do I need to be present at pickup and delivery?
Yes. Someone must be present — either you or an authorised representative — to hand over the keys and sign the Bill of Lading at pickup, and to inspect the vehicle at delivery.
Can I put personal items in my car during shipping?
It is strongly advised not to leave personal items in your vehicle. Carriers are not liable for personal belongings, and excess weight may affect transport pricing.
What if my car is not running?
We ship non-running vehicles. Inoperable cars require special equipment for loading and may incur an additional fee of $100–$200. Please let us know at the time of booking.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking 1–2 weeks in advance for the best rates and carrier selection. Last-minute bookings are possible but availability may be limited and prices higher.
What is a Bill of Lading and why does it matter?
A Bill of Lading (BOL) is a legal document recording your vehicle's condition at pickup and delivery. It protects you if any damage occurs in transit. Always review it carefully before signing and note any pre-existing damage.
